The first outing for the new ESKA squad was to the AMA Southern Championships in Kent on the 17th of Feb 2019.

It was a great competition, read on to hear about our successes!!!

Myself and Sensei Masaya traveled to Kent on the 17th February with a few members from the new ESKA squad.

The squad:

  • Max Galloway 2nd kyu
  • Jack Galloway 3rd kyu
  • Matthew Passingham 2nd Dan

Competitor Coaches:

  • Masaya Yumeda 3rd Dan
  • John Gillespie 6th Dan

Success

Nearly everyone came back with a medal of some sort:

Max produced 3x great Heian Kata to get a well-deserved 2nd place in the Boys 9 years and under category.

Jack was in the older group with Black Belts and Brown belts, so he did well to hold his own.

Matthew had a blinding competition. He was in 3 events and won medals in each: 2nd in 15 to 17 years kata. Then 3rd in the 15 to 17 Sanbon Kumite and finally 3rd in the 15 to 17 70Kg + Ippon kumite.

Masaya, along with coaching duties, took part in 3x events: Vets kata, male Open kata and Vets Open kumite. He was just out of the medals in the kata (still made it to the final 6 in both), but won a deserved 3rd place in the Vets kumite!

I stuck to just kata this year and entered the Vets and Open kata events. I came 2nd in the vets kata and 3rd in the open kata (one better than last year, so happy with that).
